James Sanders / Harrison Bankhead / Avreeayl Ra
Velvet Lounge, 67 E. Cermak Road, Chicago 312.791.9050
Wednesday, March 17, 2010, 8:30 PM
Violinist and Conjúnto leader James Sanders rests his groundbreaking Latin Jazz ensemble this month while he concentrates on writing new material.
Sanders remarked "Recent collaborations with Fred Anderson and Dee Alexander were really interesting, and it was great to revisit Afro-Cuban roots music with Samuel del Real. Now I want to explore some new ideas that I can bring back to the band."
One of those explorations begins this month with a Wednesday night Masters Series performance at the Velvet Lounge in a trio project featuring the peerless bassist Harrison Bankhead and master drummer / percussionistAvreeayl Ra. Bankhead, who has performed with everyone from Joshua Redman to Oliver Lake, is known as a musician who appreciates a musical challenge. He has never shunned an opportunity to participate in new and exciting ensembles and concerts where creativity abounds. Avreeayl Ra's career began with such masters as Pharaoh Sanders and Sun Ra. The Chicago Tribune said "Avreeayl Ra shapes the music-making swirling around him with remarkable precision and poise. He is an indispensable innovator."
Both of these veteran improvisers work regularly with new music icon Fred Anderson and are long standing members of the vaunted AACM collective.
James Sanders & Conjúnto has released two CDs: Live in Little Village and Chicago Sessions. They have appeared at Andy's, HotHouse, Jacaranda, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival, Rumba, Checkerboard Lounge, Katerina's, Summerdance, the Chicago Cultural Center, Jazz Showcase, Velvet Lounge, and many other venues.
For press inquiries and interview requests,
contact James Sanders at 773.469.0624 or e-mail James99tam@aol.com.

Experimental Piano Series
Tradition meets innovation!
**Our LAST Experimental Piano Series concert of the Season!
Note time: 6 PM
April 9: Sebastion Huydts and TUNTUI
The Experimental Piano Series (EPS) showcases performances by innovators in today's world of experimental piano. These performances include approaches that are influenced and informed by jazz, "new music," classical music, world music, and other genres, improvised or notated. EPS is co-curated by the Chicago Composers Forum and the Borderbend Arts Collective.
Dutch pianist/composer Sebastian Huydts seeks to combine 20th and 21st century innovations with traditional elements of Western music. He has won many prizes, commissions, and favorable reviews, and works regularly with several Chicago organizations, including CUBE. Violinist/violist Renee' Baker leads TUNTUI, representing a primitive sounds that rumbles from the soul, that the body alone cannot utter. With Donald Mead, piano; William Porter, cello; Karl E.H.
